Singapore

Well, if we thought KL was the future, Singapore is the future's idea of the future This place is amazing, it is so clean and efficent - even using the train system is like stepping into a sci-fi film- the place is covered in moving walkways and automated systems Everywhere is run so logically, full of innovations to make things run smoothly (even the road crossings count you down so you know if you can make it across or not. The whole place feels like it has been artfully designed rather than having evolved (I suppose thats what you can achive without much opposition).

Unfortunately, Al... (more)

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates- we are putting it right, but have been soooo busy for the last few weeks. We are in Sydney now- and are sorting out jobs/flats and things. In the next few days we'll hopefully be right up to date...

Hope you are all well- you'll all be glad to hear that it's cold here! I know you lucky b*ggers have been enjoying record temps back home- thanks for all the texts- I guess we deserve them.

Leaving the Cameron Highlands by taxi we could feel the temperature creeping up and by the time we arrived at the coach station in Ipoh I was sweating again- oh well it was nice while it lasted... I have to say the travel in Malaysia is amazing, we have caught two coaches now and both times we have walked into the station and been on a bus within a few minutes- again the leg room puts national express to shame.
After the last coach, which we took at night and arrived at 3am we decided to go for an earlier bus during the day. We got to KL by about 7pm and hoped in a cab to little china -... (more)

We had been intending to visit Tama Negara from the Perentians (travling south down the east coast) but at the last minute we decided to cross over to the west in order to go to the Cameron Highlands instead. The main reason for this, apart from the fact that Al is not big on the jungle, is that the Cameron Highlands looks like home in the pictures and has an average temperature of 20 degrees c. We are both waining from spending so long in the heat and so we thought a few days chilling out will give us the strength to do KL and Singapore. However, getting across Malaysia is near on...
Melakka

Melakka is described in Lonley Planet as a historical centre of Malaysia- filled with rich heritige colonial architecture.
This place was really just a stop over on our way thru to Singapore- we intended to stay for a couple of nights and then head off. Unfortunatley once we arrived we found that the place had little character - so we got a taxi back to the bus station and booked our tickets for the next day.
Rather that call it a complete waste of time, Kate took a tour in a rickshaw and convinced me to see a Sound and Light show.
I'd never heared of these things before, but I was... (more)

Paulo Perhentians - Kate's birthday

We arrived at the Malaysian Boarder, after a long nights travel, only to find that our 'paid for' onward travel bus had scarpered. This, after a night boat journey that i don't even remember (yes I was still partying with our post-full moon friends 10 minutes before we were due to leave) was enough to make Al pile me into a cab shaking his head at the prospect of manhandling me through another bus journey. I think the idea of going to an Islamic state where the opportunities for me to drink alcohol are limited currently has a lot of appeal to Al (secretly I know that I owe him big time for...
After a day in recovery we were ready to face the beach again and have a night out. This could have been a different place, all the bars are open and it's almost as lound, but there is hardly a soul in sight. Kate and I had the speciality of one bar - a special inebriating shake (didnt do anything for us) and were on our way home.

On the way I had to visit the little boy's room and by the time I came back Kate was talking to a girl called Rachel (an Ozzie) and her friend Rowan (bloke). One drink lead to seven and suddenly we were having as much fun as we did at the full moon. Another... (more)

We love the Perhentian Islands

After a days recovery we signed up for our free dive and this was a bit of a turning point in our time on the island. The weather had just broken, and in the aftermath of the storm the tide was turning with regard to the underwater visibility; this meant that the diving moved from being good to being spectacular and resulted in us booking another 4 dives (well it is so cheap here it seemed rude not to). This was also a turning point socially, as we got to know the people at the dive shop and our quite romantic island existance (that characterised the days up to my birthday) turned into a...
We've been in Thailand twice now- the main reason for this second stay was so we could enjoy the notorious Full Moon Party on Koh Pagnang. I've been hearing about these parties for years and was really interested to see if they lived up to the hype. The previous month some one had actually been shot! And so the notoriety grows....

Koh Pagnang is close to Koh Samui which it's fair to say is the main holiday destination for Thailand- KP spends most of the month in a sleepy haze with it's main beach (Hat Rin) the most populous area. There are cafes serving pizza and showing movies all day,... (more)

The Sanctury, Koh Phangan

Can't believe we are here - much less that Alistair is a willing accomplice. We have just arrived at The Sanctury on Hat Tien beach after a harrowing journey from Hat Yao. Apart from the roads being so steep that the tuk tuk barely made it up, they are full of twists and turns around sheer drops - I spent the whole time praying we'd survive whilst Alistair was having the time of his life. At Hat Rin (home of the famous full moon party) we transfered to a small boat for the end of the trip which you have to wade out to, rucksak on head. It is midday and the sun is pounding on our heads, I... (more)
